The Campomarino Ponds and backdune systems

We are at the site of the Campomarino ponds: backdune ponds with wet and brackish environments, a rarity in the Adriatic coastal landscape. This is a pilot area of the Interreg CASCADE project, a cooperative project between Italy and Croatia dedicated to monitoring and modeling these environments for their preservation and sustainable use of these resources. The environment is rich in both very rare plant and animal species, present due to the moderately salty waters. Here we find habitats of community importance at the EU level. In fact this area belongs to the Natura 2000 network: areas protected by the European Habitats Directive.

CASCADE will consolidate research capacities in the area through a dialogue with local stakeholders and the participation of agencies, research centers and universities (10 Italian and 6 Croatian partners). The Project has four additional partners, among which the Molise Region and the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area in Abruzzo for the mid-Adriatic areas.
