ALIENA Transnational Event: Science, Institutions and Communities Join Forces Against Invasive Species in the Adriatic

The ALIENA Transnational Event took place on 24 September 2025 in Lecce, bringing together researchers, public authorities, and economic operators to share the first results of the ALIENA project and open a concrete dialogue on the challenges posed by non-indigenous species (NIS) in the Adriatic Sea, within the framework of the Interreg Italy-Croatia Programme.

Structured across two sessions, the event was opened by the Deputy Mayor of Lecce, Roberto Giordano Anguilla, and CMCC Executive Director Laura Panzera. Presentations covered a wide range of topics, including the main NIS introduction pathways — such as shipping and aquaculture — climate-driven simulation models for forecasting species spread, early warning protocols, and citizen science through the Crafting the Sea app, which allows citizens to report NIS sightings and contribute directly to scientific monitoring.

Two round tables, moderated by Mauro Buonocore, brought scientists face to face with institutional representatives — including ARPA Puglia, the Torre Guaceto Marine Protected Area, and Port Authorities — as well as fisheries cooperatives. Discussions highlighted the urgent need for harmonised cross-border protocols and more effective regional governance frameworks.

The event received broad local media coverage and was widely disseminated through the Adriatic Ocean Literacy platform and CMCC’s communication channels, reinforcing public awareness of the ecological and socio-economic impact of invasive alien species across the Adriatic region.
